In October 2003 MLA South East commissioned a research project to look at the scale of the region's documentation and cataloguing backlogs and the issues in each of the museum, library and archive domains.
The project was a phased programme; firstly to research and assess the nature of the problem within a regional context. By consulting with museums, libraries and archives in the South East the project undertook to establish, through sampling and analysis, the reasons for the backlogs within each of the domains. The second project phase would analyse this information and use the findings to develop a robust comparable methodology for quantifying and measuring documentation and cataloguing backlogs.
The South East Cross-Domain study discusses the research findings and provides practical advice on tackling backlogs within your organisation. This guidance is provided in the form of:
- A four step process to quantifying backlogs
- How to prioritise your backlog
- National, regional and local recommendations
- A glossary of terminology
