Case Studies

MLA South East is building up a resource of case studies highlighting innovative work in museums, archives and libraries in the South East region.

Our aim is both to encourage the sharing of knowledge and good practice within the sector, and to demonstrate to those outside the sector what museums, archives and libraries can contribute to wider initiatives.

Case studies with a Standards theme are listed below.

Visit our Publications section for a complete listing of case studies.

  • Documentation Project to Help Meet the Accreditation Standard
  • 15 August 2007
  • The project was funded by a Renaissance Museum Development Grant of £2000. This was used to employ a freelancer to work closely with, and train, volunteers to tackle the museum’s documentation backlog, to write a documentation manual for future accessions and to purchase conservation grade materials for use in the museum store. The freelancer wrote a training manual for the volunteers so the documentation work could continue after her role had ended, thus enabling the museum to continue in its application for Accreditation in 2008 and ensuring long term guardianship of the collections.

  • Impact of the Renaissance South East Skills Bank on Museums in the South East
  • 06 October 2006
  • South East Museums have free access to the Skills Bank, part of the Sharing Skills programme, which is a pilot scheme aimed at helping museums in the region to make the most of local resources and share skills. It is a comprehensive online listing of people and organisations across the South East willing to share their expertise and experience with others for free. Skills available through the bank include preventive conservation, photography, design, strategic marketing and PR. This case study demonstrates the impact of the Skills Bank on a variety of museums across the South East, both from the point of view of those who have received advice and support and from those who have provided it.
