Benchmarks in Collection Care is a self-assessment checklist to help organisations in the sector identify how well they are caring for their collections, give an indication of where and what improvements might be needed, and provide a practical framework for measuring future progress.
As part of the South East Stewardship Strategy year one action plan, MLA South East committed to promote and develop resources to encourage the region’s museums, libraries and archives to adopt Benchmarks in Collection Care as a standard tool for assessing their stewardship performance.
MLA South East is working with the region's Museum Development Officers to develop a programme of training to assist museums use and adopt the framework as part of their stewardship planning process. Although it is not a requirement of the Museum Accreditation Scheme, Benchmarks in Collection Care is recommended as one of the tools museums can use to assess collection care priorities and develop a Collection Management Plan.
We recommend museums contact your local Museum Development Officer to enquire about the timetable for the above mentioned training.
