  • Transfer of museum development programmes in the South East
  • 19 August 2008
  • Following the announcement in March that MLA South East will cease operations by April 2009, we have been working closely with the South East Museum Hub to devise alternative management arrangements for the Renaissance-funded museum development programmes in the region. The responsibility for managing the programmes for the wider museums community, including the network of Museum Development Officers, their small grants scheme, training and pre-Accreditation advice, will be transferred to the Hub by November 2008.

  • The number of South East schools using the region’s museums continues to increase and the growth in secondary school use is particularly significant, increasing by 14% since 2004-05 to 57% in 2006-07. These are two key findings from the latest report on South East schools participation now available on the MLA South East website.

  • MLA South East commissioned Roger Tym & Partners (RTP) in Spring 2008 to explore the role museums, libraries and archives play in the wider visitor economy and quantify the economic value of the museums, libraries and archives sector. The full report and an accompanying In Brief ‘ are now available on our website. We would like to thank all our colleagues in the sector and in tourism for contributing to the research by taking part in interviews conducted by RTP.

  • Digital Horizons 2012

  • South East Media Network (SEMN) and its partners are inviting individuals to sign up for Digital Horizons 2012, which launches later in the autumn. Digital Horizons 2012 focuses on imparting the online skills, connections, contacts and intelligence which will enable culture, media and sport enterprises to maximise the online opportunities for engagement and business offered by the London 2012 Games.

  • Amberley Working Museum receives grant to restore De Witt Lime Kilns
  • 24 July 2008
  • The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded Amberley Working Museum a grant approaching £400,000 for an important industrial heritage restoration project. The De Witt Lime Kilns at the Museum are to be fully repaired and an interpretive display created.

  • 23 July 2008
  • The latest announcement from Awards for All sees 62 projects in the South East sharing funding of £455,428. Grants of between £300 and £10,000 are awarded for people to take part in art, sport, heritage and community activities, and projects that promote education, the environment and health in the local community.

  • New guidance on CRB checks for volunteers
  • 23 July 2008
  • The Cabinet Office have published guidance to help organisations that use volunteers to be clear about when they do and don’t need to carry out Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks on volunteers. The guidance will help cut unnecessary red tape and responds to concerns voiced by the voluntary sector that potential volunteers can be put off if they are asked to undergo a CRB check without good reason.

  • Royal Society ‘Local heroes’ grant opportunity
  • 18 July 2008
  • As part of a year long programme to celebrate its 350th anniversary in 2010, the Royal Society will provide small grants for museums, galleries, libraries or archives to enable them to celebrate their local scientific heroes, whether they were individuals pioneers of the industrial age, geniuses that changed the way we see the world or contemporary scientists finding solutions to today's problems.
